7. Dog breeds

One of the most common reasons why your dog sheds so much fur is because of their breed. For instance, their coat traits, the amount of sunshine they receive each day, the weather, their medical condition and allergies, their diet, their general hygiene, and their hormones may all affect it. However, a healthy dog will never shed as much fur as an unhealthy one. For example, if your dog has intestinal worms, they will shed more often because of that. Parasites will feed on the nutrients your dog eats; therefore, a lot of health issues will develop.

If you’re planning to adopt a dog but don’t have one yet, it’s important to note that different breeds have different shedding levels. To help you choose a breed that suits your preference, we’ve prepared a list of breeds that shed more fur compared to others:

  • German shepherd
  • Golden Retriever
  • Siberian Husky
  • Akita
  • Corgi

Because of the nature of their coats, all of these breeds are known as being quite heavy shedders. They have extremely long hair or a double coat. Some of them have longer, heavier coats since they were initially bred in colder climates (Husky, for example).
It is highly important to ensure proper grooming of dogs and to train them to tolerate bathing. Some dogs may develop a fear of water, hence it is crucial to introduce them to water as puppies and teach them to be comfortable with it. Failure to do so may make it difficult to train them when they grow older.

We hope this article about the reasons why your dog sheds so much, managed to clear things up for you and help you understand better how to take care of your dog and its health.

  1. Your articles are very interesting, helpful, and I relate to all of them. I am 81, have a 5 year old Chihuahua mix that wants to go with me every time I leave the house. Can’t take her to doctor appointments, shopping, etc. Do take her whenever possible. We do snuggle for hours in the afternoons.
Took her to my sisters two years ago. Got her out of the car, had her on a leash that had some slack in it. She took off running, tried to attack a man and I went down on blacktop face first. Broke my nose, left wrist, and three teeth.
Rescued her, wanted a younger dog because I didn’t want to get attached and her pass before me.
After the incident two years ago, I am not comfortable walking her on a leash. Any suggestions?
